BASIC EMERGENCY PREPARATION PROCEDURES:

PREPARE:

Make sure you have an adequate supply of alternate heating fuel such as wood, coal, etc. and dry matches

Plan to store abut 1 quart of drinking water per person per day.

Remember to have extra water for washing and food preparation. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.

Have a good stock of non-perishable foods available (including baby food)

Be sure to have an ample supply of medications, prescriptions, baby and personal hygiene supplies.

INSPECT:

Replenish your battery supply

Check for working flashlights and portable radios

Restock your first aid kit.

Be sure your fire extinguisher is working and recently inspected.

PROTECT:

Take inventory of your personal belongings

Move inside or otherwise secure porch furniture, bicycles, trash cans, etc.

If the power does go out:

Turn off lights, tvs,etc.

Keep refrigerators and freezers shut

In winter, wrap water pipes with insulation or newspaper , turn off water and leave faucets dripping to keep pipes from bursting

Stay clear of downed power lines

CONNECT:

Listen to local radio stations for information

If asked to evacuate, turn off electricity and other utilities

Let your family or neighbors know where you’ll be

DON’T LEAVE HOME UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST –

HIGH WINDS, DOWNED POWER LINES, AND FALLEN TREES POSE VERY REAL THREATS
